What is DNS Host Mappings?

Domain Name Server (DNS) Host Mappings is the ability to associate a hostname to resolve to an IP address within your Local Area Network (LAN) specifically, inside the VLAN. This gives you the ability to use IP related services like Ping, SSH, File shares / storage, Application servers, Printers etc. allowing you to reach the device using the unique name you assigned instead of remembering IP addresses associated. Host mappings are not limited to the VLAN that the device exists on, if Inter-VLAN routing is enabled a host mapping can be configured at the source VLANs DNS settings. This will enable the ability for those devices to resolve to the hostnames assigned to the device on the other VLAN.

How to Configure a Host Mapping?

Navigate to the DNS tab associated to the specific VLAN
  1. In the Dashboard, navigate to: Network-wide > VLANS  > Select VLAN  > DNS tab
  2. Set an Override domain (this will be the hostname of the device).
  3. Set the Destination IP.
  4. Click the checkmark to save.
