With rate limiting on the Meter Security Appliance you can throttle speeds for a specific VLAN, host, or connections between internal and external hosts. This is most commonly used to restrict bandwidth used by the Guest network. Another use case may be to throttle particular clients that eat up a lot of the bandwidth provided by the ISP.

How to Create a Rate Limiting Rule?

To create a rate limiting rule navigate to Firewall > Rate limiting and click on the ‘Add rule’ button. This will expand the menu on the right-hand side of the screen:

The following fields are configurable (some are marked as optional):
  • Enable - Toggle OFF to disable the rate limiting rule. Toggle ON to enable the rule.
  • Name - This will be the display name of the rule in the Dashboard.
  • Description - Describe the function of the rule.
  • Source Interface Type - Select if you want to limit a VLAN or WAN interface.
  • Limit - The download/upload rate limit in kbps.
  • Limit Per Client - If set, each client (source) will be limited to the specified rate. Otherwise, the maximum rate is shared between all clients.
  • Protocol - Select which protocol the rule should be applied to, or ALL.
  • VLANs/WAN - Select which VLAN or WAN (depending on interface type selection to throttle. Use the ‘Customize Source’ toggle to set a specific host or range within a VLAN. A port range can also be used for further customization.
  • Destination - Used to limit connections to a specific destination address. If left blank the rate limit will be applied to all destinations.
Once your rule is added - you will see it displayed in the center of the page:

In the above example - only a single host on the guest VLAN to 300mbps up and down. The green check next to the rule indicates that the rule is enabled.

How to identify high-usage clients

The easiest way to identify high-usage clients is by sorting for upload/download on the clients page (insights > clients). The upload/download amounts displayed here are the amount of data sent/received by the client in the selected time filter.High-usage Wi-Fi-connected clients can cause Wi-Fi issues on other connected devices if they are over-utilizing the access point’s channel.
