What is Policy Routing?

Policy routing matches traffic to user-defined rules. If the traffic matches the rule, traffic will be routed in accordance with the rule. With Meter, policy-based routing can be used to route specific traffic over a defined WAN interface. For example, if there are servers that generate a lot of traffic, policy routes can be used to send traffic from these servers over a single WAN interface, while other user traffic is routed over another WAN interface. With this type of setup, using multiple WAN interfaces with different ISPs ensures that users maintain consistent connectivity.

How to Create a Policy Route

A policy-based route can be configured under Network-wide > Routing > Policy routing. Click ‘Add policy routing rule’ to create a new rule.

This will expose the configuration panel:

Enabled - Ensure the toggle is flipped to ON to enable the rule. Name - This will be the display name of the rule once created. WAN - Select the WAN interface the matched traffic should be routed. Protocols - Select the protocols (TCP, UDP, ICMP, or ALL) that can be matched to the rule. Source - Select either ‘IP address’ or VLAN’. Use ‘IP address’ to select either a specific host, host range, and/or port range. Select ‘VLAN’ to match an entire VLAN to the rule. Destination - The external destination (public) address used to match the rule.
